Catalan fiction in the 15th century is framed within the context of the expansion of the Crown of Aragon around the Mediterranean, the emergence of Valencia as the cultural capital of the Crown, the crisis in the prevailing mediaeval values, the consolidation of a monetary economy, and fertile contacts between Catalan culture and Castile, France, Burgundy and especially Italy. Dennis Villeneuve’s Arrival (2016) has a key topic the encounter with the other and the mediations mandatory for this very encounter could be the occasion for a radical transformation of the subject, instead of a moment of immunitary closeness. By analysing the complex theoretical and formal structure put in place by the movie, this paper resorts to three keywords in the recent history of critical visual theory – that is, medium, communication, munus (e.g., gift in latin) – to show the exemplary nature of cinematic narrative in the understanding of contemporary biopolitical processes.

Enrique de Villena (1384-1434), noble aficionado a las letras, autor bilingüe en catalán y castellano, residente algunos años (ca. 1416-1429) de manera intermitente en la corte valenciana de Alfonso V de Aragón y Juan de Navarra, influyó en el concepto de literatura del autor de la novela caballeresca Curial e Güelfa (Enyego d’Àvalos?), escrita en catalán (Nápoles-Milán, c. 1445-1448) y relacionable con la corte italiana del Magnánimo.
